“Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: ‘Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water and in the word.’”
– Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1213
Procedures for Baptism
All parents are required to take a baptismal preparation class that is held at Our Lady of the Assumption prior to the child’s baptism. If it has been more than two years since the parents have attended the baptismal preparation class, they must attend the class again. Please contact Gretchen Heath firstname.lastname@example.org to register for the class.
The child must have at least one sponsor (Godparent) that is a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Catholic Church. Canon Law specifically defines the requirements for the sponsor (Godparent) for baptism in canons 872 to 874 and they include:
- Sponsors must be at least 16 years of age
- If the sponsor is married, it must be a valid sacramental marriage
A letter or sponsor form from the godparent’s Parish of Registration indicating they are eligible to be a godparent must be provided prior to scheduling the baptism.
Ordinarily, our baptisms are scheduled during any one of the weekend masses (except during Advent and Lent) and outside of mass we do them after the 9am mass. Please contact Gretchen Heath email@example.com for more information.
