Procedures for Baptism

It is the policy of Our Lady of the Assumption Church (OLA) that you must be an active, practicing member of the parish prior to scheduling a baptism.  An “active” family is defined as one of the following:

  • Registered in the Parish
  • Attends mass regularly
  • Involved in Time, Talent and Stewardship.

All parents are required to take a baptismal preparation class that is held here at Our Lady of the Assumption prior to the child’s baptism. If it has been more than two years since the parents have attended the baptismal preparation class, they must attend the class again. Please contact Gretchen Heath gheath@olachurch.org  to register for the class.

The child must have at least one sponsor (Godparent) that is a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Catholic Church. Canon Law specifically defines the requirements for the sponsor (Godparent) for baptism in canons 872 to 874 and they include:

  • Sponsors must be at least 16 years of age
  • If the sponsor is married, it must be a valid sacramental marriage

A letter or sponsor form from the godparent’s Parish of Registration indicating they are eligible to be a godparent must be provided prior to scheduling the baptism.

Our baptisms are scheduled during any one of the weekend masses (except during Advent and Lent) and outside of mass we do them after the 9am mass, approximately 10:10. Please contact Gretchen Heath gheath@olachurch.org  for more information.

"A Marist Ministry. I pray that your presence here will be long and happy. I also pray that your spiritual life will continue to grow as you come to know yourself in worship, education and service." -Reverend Jim Duffy S.M.
